PREPARING YOUR HOME EXTERIOR FOR A WINNIPEG PAINTING JOB

Painting gray paint on a white wall

Now that the Winnipeg weather is getting warmer, things that most homeowners had to put a hold on because of the winter can finally get taken care of. For a number of reasons, the winter season is ideal for interior painting. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions, exterior painting has become impossible during the cold months.

Spring has finally begun and it is time to talk to your most trusted Winnipeg painting company so you can start giving your home that makeover that you have been planning all winter! Whether you are looking into selling your property, or you just simply want to give your home a totally different look, All Weather Exteriors has a team of expert painters that can help you with all your painting needs.

Because it significantly contributes to the overall appearance of your home, exterior painting is undeniably crucial. You need to make sure that everything is done right so that your home, no matter how old, will always look brand new. To ensure proper application and adhesion of paint, careful preparations are needed.

Steps professional painters follow to prepare surfaces for painting that you can use as a guide:

CLEAR AREA TO BE PAINTED

Before starting with the actual preparation of the surface to be painted, make sure to trim tree branches and move potted plants nearby if you have any, to ensure that there is enough workspace for the painters. This will also help avoid falling leaves ending up on wet paint once the new paint has been applied.

REMOVE MOLD AND MILDEW

These are typically brown, green, or black fungi that grow on the paint film. The presence of these fungi is usually caused by dampness and the lack of sunlight received by the surface. These must be completely removed before a new paint application to make sure that it will not be a problem in the future.

Removal of mold and mildew can be done by thoroughly cleaning the surface by scrubbing it using a bleach-based compound. Be sure to use goggles and gloves to protect yourself. Mildewcide can also be added to your paint to avoid mold and mildew problems in the future.

WASH THE SURFACE WITH PRESSURE

To achieve proper adhesion of new paint, the surface to be painted needs to be as clean as possible, free from all kinds of dirt and stains. Pressure washing has proven to be an effective way to clean surfaces. Make sure to start washing walls from the top all the way down. If the surface is made up of wood, avoid pressure washing as this may cause damage. Instead, clean wooden surfaces by carefully scrubbing them with water and detergent.

REPAIR DAMAGES AND SCRAPE AWAY FLAKING PAINT

Inspect the entire surface to be painted and check for damages like rots, cracks, and holes. Remember to take into consideration the type of damaged surface. The manner of repair it requires would depend if it is wood, metal, siding, masonry, or stucco.

Be sure to peel off any flaking paint because not doing so would make adhesion of new paint impossible. Keep in mind that this step of the process should be done once the surface has completely dried after it has been washed.

CAULK AND PRIME THE SURFACE

Fill any voids and cracks as well as trim around windows and doors with caulk. Let the caulk overflow and just wipe away the excess with a damp rag.

After caulking, apply primer on the entire surface, especially on the exposed parts where old paint has peeled off. Priming is a very important part of the preparation process as doing so will help guarantee proper adhesion of new paint. There are different kinds of primers out there but our professional painters would know which one is best for your house.

COVER DOORS AND WINDOWS

To avoid accidentally painting areas of the surface that you do not intend to paint with it, make sure to cover and protect them. Doing so will help the job get done sooner as the painters can work faster not having to avoid certain areas of the surface.
